Notes and Editorial Reviews

This selection received a Grammy Award nomination for "Best Chamber Music
Performance."
Founded in 1965 in conjunction with the opening of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center ushered in a new and exciting era for chamber music in the United States. The group has since relied on a core ensemble of the highest quality performers that is regularly supplemented by the world's most distinguished solo and chamber musicians. As a way of inaugurating a new century, the group has turned to recording the complete collection of chamber works of the composer who did more for chamber music than any other composer since Beethoven, Claude Debussy.
Debussy's chamber music output is wonderfully
Read more varied, from the charming and remarkably poised Piano Trio of 1879 (written when he was only 18) to his justly famous String Quartet of 1893 to the stunning Sonata for Violin and Piano of 1917 (written in the year before his death and the last piece that he performed in public). There is nothing perfunctory about the performances on this compilation; each one is impassioned, committed, and thoroughly convincing. With a roster of performers including the likes of David Shifrin, Ani Kavafian, and André Watts, it is difficult to imagine this music in more capable hands. Read less
