Notes and Editorial Reviews

Maurice Ravel was born in the French Basque town of Ciboure in 1875. His father was of Swiss descent and his mother was Basque. She had been born in the French Basque coastal town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, where Ravel spent many of his summer holidays. He learned the Basque language, Euskera, and traveled throughout the Basque country. Today, Ravel is recognized as one of the 20th century's greatest orchestrators. The meticulous tonal colors and original arrangements of his symphonic works are unquestionably the pinnacle of 19th and early 20th century French orchestral development. Ravel had modeled his Piano Concerto in G major in part on the divertimentos and concertos by Mozart and Saint-Saens. In addition to its carefree virtuosity, this Read more composition also contains shades of the Basque country and jazz elements. The Alborada del Gracioso captures the colors of Spain in the strumming of a guitar, syncopated rhythms and hemiolas. Ravel composed the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major on commission from Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, the brother of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in World War I. Like the Concerto in G, it includes numerous jazz elements. The piano part is far from simple; the solo is highly complex and demands a prodigious technique. Bilbao-born pianist Joaquin Achucarro's victory at the 1959 Liverpool International Competition led to his debut the following year with the London Symphony Orchestra; since then he has performed in 59 countries with 193 different orchestras. The Euskadi Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary next April. It is led by the eminent Swiss conductor Gilbert Varga. Read less
