Notes and Editorial Reviews

Given Ravel's lifelong admiration for Chabrier, whom he knew personally as well as through his music, Alain Planes's placing the younger man's A la maniere de Chabrier at the end of this programme adds a nice touch. Chabrier is still underrated in this country, perhaps because he fails to fit in to any historical school and that of Franck left him pretty well untouched. In fact he is closer to the Bizet of L'Ar/esienne, not least in such a piece as the "Danse villageoise" (No. 7 of the Dix pieces pittoresques). His piano writing in general, whose influence Ravel recognized in his own early keyboard music, is often vigorous and even distinctly chunky (for a sample, try the "Menuet pompeux", the penultimate of the Dix Read more pikes), but elsewhere it can be gracefully imaginative; indeed, he wrote to the dedicatee of his Bourree fantasque that in it he had "compte 113 sonorites differentes", and in its quietly lyrical second section one can see what he meant.

The Pieces pittoresques show us this composer in his most happily melodious and witty vein. They are mainly shortish, the exception being the "Menuet pompeux" mentioned above which Ravel orchestrated for a ballet in 1918—not 1937, as the booklet suggests. Planes is clearly at home in them, and if there is a certain plainness about his performances, that is not unsuited to this very direct music. (What Ravel owed to Chabrier had to do with Gallic freshness and not impressionism.) The other pieces are also persuasively presented and the recording suits the playing in being clear and immediate, although somewhat overwhelming towards the end of the Ronde Champétre.
