Notes and Editorial Reviews
These nicely-packaged discs combine familiar Schubert in superb performances with the unfamiliar newly-minted by Brian Newbould... The best of the unfamiliar items is what is here called No. 10 which derives from sketches Schubert made on his death bed. This is fascinating, one of the great Might-Have-Beens—if only he'd lived another month or two. But inevitably we hear Schubert diluted, and it cannot hope to stand up to repeated hearings like the familiar Greats. Also I don't feel that the best movement, the slow one, quite achieves its potential in this performance. But you really shouldn't miss this work; it's memorable, and some of the other reconstituted sketches are well worth hearing too.

----------
Can the world's most-recorded chamber orchestra and conductor have any secrets? Well, Abbado, Böhm, Davis and Harnoncourt have all recorded well received Schubert cycles but Marriner's is, at times, the best of all. Brian Newbould's involvement means the scholarship is impeccable; his completions of the Seventh and Tenth symphonies are tantalising what-might-have-beens, and movements such as the finale of the Fourth are more tautly voiced and rhythmically buoyant than you'd ever credit from this most studio of studio bands.

An old favorite now on CD. May 8, 2012

"I had owned this set many years ago in cassette form. It is so awesome to hear the music again, but this time in CD form. The first symphony - somewhat hard to find - is my favorite. Highly recommended!"
