Notes and Editorial Reviews

Musician and composer Georg Gebel (the younger) was Kapellmeister to the courts of several Dukes and Princes and composed a variety of instrumental and vocal works as did his more famous contemporaries. Here are three charming Christmas Cantatas and it need not be Christmas to enjoy them.  Excellent Baroque Music of Amazing Originality! October 4, 2015 By Clifford H C. (Thompson, MB) See All My Reviews "This is my second disk by Georg Gebel ''The Second'' 1709-1753 a composer that has fell into relative obscurity and that is really a shame. These cantatas are wonderful pieces of “High German Church Theater”. Some of the best of the time! You can see why he was so well liked by his employers and the public in his community. There are times that you will feel like you are listening to Teleman or Stozel and even CPE Bach. These are inventive, creative, and above all enjoyable to listen too. The performances are excellent overall. Alto- Britta Schwarz does an astounding job. Her aria ''Der Schattendiest hat nun sein Ende'' had me almost in tears. Ludger Remy and Les Amis de Philippe give an outstanding performance. The rest of the soloists are excellent. Gebel presents so very dark music for the Christmas season in this recording and Ludger Remy really plays on this darkness and the contrasts it with the more joyful moments. These recordings really leave me wanting to hear more from Georg Gebel." Report Abuse
