Notes and Editorial Reviews

[V]enerable recordings... [A]n idiomatic reading of the Requiem in its full-orchestra garb, with Ameling in top form in the Pie Jesu and strong contributions by Kruysen in his two appearances. Fournet is reverential, but neither lachrymose nor pretentious. There may be better versions available, but Fournet's certainly conveys the essence of Faure's "lullaby of death." Similarly, his Pavane, played without chorus, is admirably straightforward. The highlight of the disc, however, is Zinman's expanded Pelleas et Mélisande suite. Zinman plays six numbers instead of the usual four, including Mélisande's song, "The king's three blind daughters," radiantly sung by Jill Gomez (curiously, in English).
