Notes and Editorial Reviews

The 1949/50 season was Rudolf Bing's first season at the Met. To insure a successful opening night, he scheduled three weeks of rehearsals. Jussi Bjorling was appalled. He loathed rehearsing and tried to avoid it whenever possible. An imploring letter from Bing actually got him to appear, but he grumbled all the time that "he soon would not be able to afford to sing at the Met any more". The singer actually hated travelling, signing photographs, official receptions and all the other trappings of stardom. As an actor, he may not have been to everyone's satisfaction, but the soprano Elisabeth Soderstrom recalls that "when singing with Bjorling one always did better than usual. Looking into his eyes while on stage one always saw the character Read more of the role he was in. With his voice, he gave the role its body and with his eyes its soul". Jussi Bjorling was a master of breath control, legato singing and concentration of sound. The crystal clear beauty of his voice, which at the same time had the required weight for powerful attacks, remained intact until his death at 49. The fact that he was called "The Swedish Caruso" did not come by chance. Dorothy Caruso gave her authorization when she told Bjorling: "Enrico's crown belongs to you alone." Read less
