...The musical side of the present set should provide...aural enticement, for it includes a group of some of Bach's greatest cantatas in performances that would be difficult to equal, let alone surpass... The 1990 coupling of Ich hatte viel Bekiimmeris, BW V21, one of the greatest of Bach's earlier cantatas, and Am abend aber desselbigen Sabbats, BW V42, is equally treasurable. The latter, composed in Leipzig for the first Sunday after Easter in 1725, is perhaps not as well known as some of the other works here, but it is in no way overshadowed. It opens with a wonderful orchestral introduction, almost certainly a lost concerto-movement, and includes a big, warmly expressive alto aria (here splendidly sung by Gerard Lesne) paradigmatic of Read more the gentle evening glow that suffuses the whole cantata...
