Notes and Editorial Reviews
These fine performances derive from the complete set of "London" Symphonies that DG released here in 1973, the Surprise having appeared the previous year as a trailer. Listening to them again has been the expected pleasure; the playing of the LPO in the Surprise is marvellously vital and crisp, and the score has a splendid freshness in Jochum's hands. In the Clock Symphony, his slow movement ticks away fairly briskly with beautifully articulated detail and finely shaped phrasing. His tempo in the finale places a strain on the LPO strings but there is great freshness and brio here. The recording is well balanced with detail in excellent perspective though the reverberant acoustic occasionally blurs tuttis in the finales. This is a
popular coupling but this version is possibly the finest of them both musically and in terms of recorded sound.
