Unsurpassable collection of Viennese favorites January 23, 2013
By David Levy (Chicago, IL) See All My Reviews
"I have 2 other recordings of Schubert's unfinished symphony by this maestro, both by the Berlin Philarmonic, one having been done for DGG in the 60's and the other in the early 70's for EMI. They're both outstanding and I dare say that even if I haven't heard every other recording, nay performance regardless live or recorded, these would have been the best ever done, in my opinion. Karajan's penchant for mysterious emphasis on attack, crescendo, diminuendo, all conceivable forms of orchestral majesty and depth are more suited for this composition than perhaps any other orchestral music. To hear any other conductor's rendition of Schubert's 8th by comparison,is to hear at best, well-executed etudes for orchestra; but this Salzburg festival performance surpasses both: it has more drama and power than either Berlin recording. Karajan allows the brass to hit harder and even the slightly faster tempi add to the atmosphere. The follow-up Strauss music is simply fine wine."
