Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mackerras, an effortless shaper of phrase, impetus and texture throughout, relishes the wittiest side of Zarathustra (Nietzsche’s waltzing superman, with aristocratic help from Hugh Bean’s solo violin), the serious aspect of Juan’s lovemaking and gives a rounded portrait of Till; five stars for all these aspects, at any price.

Performance: 5 (out of 5), Sound: 5 (out of 5)

Sir Mack Excels September 21, 2014 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "You can always count on Mackerras to deliver a good solid performance. His Zarathustra ranks with the finest, possibly only second to Reiner/CSO on RCA. Consider the Don Juan and Till a bonus.Simon Rhodes, the engineer, gives us a demonstration quality recording. The bass is impressive but not exaggerated. You really can't go wrong on this one especially at Archiv's on sale price (5 @$20)." Report Abuse
