Notes and Editorial Reviews

Alun Hoddinott's musical language has always been internationalist in Both examples are on display in this engaging recording of the composer's songcycles. The disc opens with Landscapes (Ynys Môn)— fittingly vivid and colourful settings of five poetic reflections of Anglesey. Hoddinott is at his imperious best here, applying swathes of musical brushstrokes to Emyr Humphreys's poetic canvas with bold precision. In comparison, the Six Welsh Folksongs which close the disc are more workmanlike, although the composer crafts some arresting accompaniments from the melodic character of each folk tune. Both cycles are given highly nuanced and powerfully projected performances by Nicky Spence, underpinned with some accomplished piano playing Read more from Andrew Matthews-Owen. Spence adopts a more direct approach in The Silver Hound, a series of dramatic character pieces on life, death and memory. The serious tone is extended to One must always have love, settings for soprano of Rossetti, Dickinson, Alice Bliss and Yeats. Claire Booth imparts just the right amount of expression and detachment, and her contribution to the ambitious, broadly conceived Towy Landscape for two singers and pianists is equally impressive.

This recording, supplemented with copious and illuminating booklet-notes by Geraint Lewis, bears witness to Hoddinott's fecund imagination and invention in bringing such poetic landscapes to lustrous musical life.
