Notes and Editorial Reviews

There is no such thing as 'Belgian singing.'On the other hand, Belgian singing has its representatives, usually beautiful and noble. Suzanne Danco, the distinguished mozartian from the 50s, Clara Clairbert, the portly nightingale, Jules Bastin, the debonair patriarch. And yet, however steeped in glory, not one of them has attained the notoriety- let's call it- planetary that enjoys Jose? Van Dam. Sometimes as viennese Figaro, sometimes « Golaud of the century », now an unpretentious singer, now a staggering wagnerian, Jose? Van Dam is on all stages, with the greatest conductors, in the greatest concert halls, as the saying goes. But he is also Belgian and only appeared at La Monnaie on the 20th anniversary of his career. It was Gerard Read more Mortier who brought him back from exile for a Don Carlo, of which we offer two fragments unpublished to date. After that follow 30 years, dozens of roles, immortalized in recordings by the Belgian radio. If Wagner holds an important place (the great monologues have incredible intensity), it is as a Verdi baritone that he explodes because the pages of the Swan of Busseto show him in all his forms: Philippe II grieving, Simone explosive, Falstaff authoritarian and resigned. And finally, French opera to which he confers marks of nobility: the fleeting trail of a dignified Golaud, a Mephisto as twinkle of an eye and the fiendish cunning of evil in The Tales of Hoffman. Here is a fragment of history contained in two CDs.
