Notes and Editorial Reviews

With Janácek's two string quartets now long established as among the masterpieces of the entire repertory, there are of course plenty of recordings to choose from. The Guarneri Quartet take-their place in distinguished company. The technical problems are no longer so daunting as they were, now that more players have come to absorb the reasons for them, and everything is well in place here, and effectively balanced in a sensitive recording. Moreover, the different characters of the two works are brought out, the tense, edgy eroticism of the First Quartet, the impassioned outpourings of the Second. There is more unexpectedness in the shifts between tempos and moods in the latter than they suggest, as the capricious and difficult nature Read more of its subject, Janácek's beloved Kamila Stösslová, is articulated, perhaps more sense of strain. But these are good performances... [T]he Juilliard Quartet are not so well attuned to the works as any of these...

-- Gramophone [10/1998]

---------------------------------------------------

The Guarneri Quartet certainly has a fiercely dramatic way with these works... The sound is beautifully clear and the Guarneri’s level of virtuosity is remarkable...
