These Columbia Masterworks stereo recordings were made in 1977, just a few months before Stokowski's death at the age of 95. Reviewing the original LPs, Edward Greenfield wrote in Gramophone that the Italian Symphony was given "an exhilarating performance," whilst Mortimer Frank in Fanfare declared that "this is a great Brahms Second, one of the best in the catalogue."
