Notes and Editorial Reviews

I would have preferred something other than the thrice-familiar Aida excerpts to fill out the CD but, otherwise, I have no particular fault to find with this collection, since the other pieces in it are usually omitted from performances of their operas. The Manhattan Center venue gives "the MET Orchestra" (as they're billed here) a big, solid sonority with discreet spotlighting picking up any difficult details. The annotations imply that the Aida selections are new recordings, not taken from the 1990 recording of the complete opera, but the performances and sound seem exactly alike to me. The performances of all the music are lively and highly polished. I wish Sony had provided some inner access to the Ballet de la Reine from Don Read more Carlos.
