BINCHOIS Sacred Music Brigitte Lesne, dir; Discantus AEON AECD 1096 (61:25 Text and Translation)

Apart from five chants and four carols, these 20 tracks offer polyphonic sacred music of Gilles Binchois (1400–60), for 30 years a chaplain to the court of Burgundy. No Mass cycle has survived, but four single movements of the Mass Ordinary are heard here. Since recorded Binchois leans toward his chansons, there is not much familiar music on this program. Read more style="font-style:italic">Da pacem Domine was recorded by Konrad Ruhland for Sony, and A solis ortus cardine was undoubtedly recorded by Bruno Turner for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, but I have not verified any other duplications. Among the interesting first recordings is the Marian introit Salve sancta parens , suggesting that votive Masses of Our Lady were celebrated at court frequently. Two motets are contrafacta of Binchois’s own songs.

The women’s vocal ensemble adds only handbells to the voices in some pieces, yielding a light, high sound that offers some lovely renditions. Brigitte Lesne has ranged widely over medieval and early Renaissance sacred music with consistently tasteful interpretations. Binchois’s discography has not shown many recordings of his sacred music as generous as this disc, so we are fortunate that it is done so well. This is highly recommended.
