Notes and Editorial Reviews

François Couperin, known as "Couperin le Grand" was one of the great masters of the Baroque age though his individual and incisive music is not as often encountered as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi or Telemann. Couperin admired the works of Corelli and introduced the Trio Sonata form to France. His four volumes of keyboard music contain a great many imaginative pieces, which were composed so as to be performed on either solo harpsichord or assigned to instruments to form chamber works. The fascination of Couperin's music has extended even to 20th century composers such Maurice Ravel and Richard Strauss, both of whom created suites based on his works.

Harpsichordist Frederick Haas was written: "Who is Couperin,
Read more besides his music? A rather vague ghost whereas his music is evidently one of the most characterized. His music must be played, must exist. It is pointless to try to describe it any further: it has to sound, and maybe we will understand something important whilst bringing it to life." These words of the performer bring us back to basics: the pleasure of listening to this music, the joy of (re)discovering a pillar of the French keyboard repertoire.
