Notes and Editorial Reviews

First Time on CD!

There seems to be little doubt that George Bernard Shaw could have been – had he so desired – as great an operetta librettist as he was a dramatist. For just as his play Pygmalion served as the basis upon which the phenomenal My Fair Lady was built, so fifty years ago it was Shaw's Arms and the Man that provided the foundation for the enchanting and enduring Chocolate Soldier. In fact, it was the Irish playwright himself who had once described Arms and the Man as “an opera bouffe without the music.”

Only if you must December 20, 2011 By Elliot F. (Granada Hills, CA) See All My Reviews "This is only for completists. Unfortunately hearing more than just "My Hero" doesn't mean the rest is very good. Only if you can sit through lyrics like "tell me pretty maiden" or "oh sir, I cannot kiss you" and other treacle will this be satisfying. The performances are very stiff (as if everyone is reading a script for the first time). MGM was right in keeping Stevens and dumping the rest. I was quickly bored and I was very disappointed with the whole thing. The singing of course is fine and the sound is very good early (1958) RCA stereo." Report Abuse
