STRAUSS Opera Scenes & Lieder Natalie Dessay (sop); with Felicity Lott, Angelika Kirschschlager, Sophie Koch, Thomas Allen; Antonio Pappano (cond); Royal Op House Covent Garden O VIRGIN 6419332 247 (65:35 Text and Translation)

Has it really taken seven years for Natalie Dessay’s Richard Strauss album to be released in the United States when it was released in Europe in 2004? Dessay offers four of the six Brentano Lieder (op. 68), and scenes from Read more style="font-style:italic">Ariadne, Arabella , and Rosenkavalier . Even though the lion’s share falls to the French coloratura, significant contributions are made by the other participants listed above. Of the three operas, only Ariadne is part of Dessay’s active repertoire; she sang Sophie in Rosenkavalier a few times early in her career and quickly abandoned the role and does not seem likely ever to sing Zdenka in Arabella . Her Zerbinetta has been appreciated in such wildly different productions as those of the Met, the Paris Opera (both available on DVD), and the Salzburg Festival, and it is clear that there is no facet of the role that eludes her. Recorded prior to the soprano’s second absence from the stage, she is here in excellent form, whether in the roulades of the Brentano songs or Zerbinetta’s caroling or the lyric, high-flying lines of Zdenka and Sophie. Sophie Koch is an ideal Composer and Angelika Kirschschlager a sumptuous Octavian. Felicity Lott displays her customary vocal quirks and moreover lacks the vocal velvet that is essential for Arabella or the Marschallin. Thomas Allen is a sympathetic Music Master, and utters his “Ja, ja” in classic fashion. The Brentano songs deserve wider acclaim than has hitherto been accorded. Dessay sings the four middle songs, those most suitable for a coloratura soprano, omitting the first and last where a more substantial voice is required. To hear a remarkable performance of the entire set, listen to Riccarda Merbeth on a Naxos recording, where she gives both aspects their due. Antonio Pappano and the Covent Garden Orchestra offer exceptional support.
