American soprano Darynn Zimmer gives herself a challenge on this selection of folk-song arrangements, from Spain, France and the New World, as they tend to call for different styles of presentation. On the whole, she acquits herself quite well, with a silvery and expressive voice. Her particular timbre is least suited for the Spanish set, all of them from the canciones español collected by the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who was also a trained musician and ardent folklorist. These are zesty, sensual pieces probably best suited to a zarzuela singer. Zimmer gives them a good shot, with impressive agility in the fast music, but she lacks the chesty intonation and swooping phrasing that a less well-trained folk singer might find more natural to produce. The relatively cool demeanor she displays in this music is matched by her accompanists, surprisingly, since the amazing Eliot Fisk can do pretty much whatever he wants on the guitar, and could have spiced things up.

The balance of the program also consists of folk music in arrangements by academically trained composers, all in a calmer temperament that suits Zimmer’s crystalline voice nicely. The French songs were assembled by Julien Tiersot and are informed by a sprightly Renaissance flavor. Zimmer brings them off with a courtly elegance. Even better are the very lovely songs incorporating melodies from the Omaha and Winnebago tribes that were created by the early 20th-century American composer and critic Charles Wakefield Cadman. Zimmer conveys the sweetness and nobility of these songs beautifully, and with exquisitely clear diction. She closes with a rapturous rendition of the famous Riddle Song . A lovely recital overall.
