Notes and Editorial Reviews

TCHAIKOVSKY The Nutcracker Simon Rattle, cond; Berlin PO EMI 6463852 (2 CDs: 86:24)

"Simon Rattle’s note in the accompanying booklet tells us of his growing admiration for the music of Tchaikovsky, and this glowing account of The Nutcracker with sumptuous playing by the Berlin Philharmonic is his tribute to the composer’s genius. The orchestral solos are lovingly played, the sweep of the emotional music is compelling, but crispness is evident where Read more required, while the character dances in act II are nicely differentiated. We are allowed to admire Tchaikovsky’s talents as orchestrator, while appreciating his knack of finding melodies that remain with us. Rattle points out that this is even more amazing given the constraints imposed by Petipa in terms of how many measures and what type of music he wanted for each particular scene, but a glimpse at John Warrack’s contribution to the now, alas, defunct series of BBC Music Guides informs us that Tchaikovsky did not always follow his instructions to the letter. In addition, it was not Petipa but Ivanov who choreographed the work, which may have resulted in additional alterations to the scenario. The music remains a delight from beginning to end, particularly when one has seen various productions of the work so that the mind’s eye can complete one’s enjoyment."
