Notes and Editorial Reviews

"This recording may indeed be the best B minor Mass ever recorded, and that is saying a lot in a field where you can hardly throw a stone without hitting a great one... The period instruments are magnificent, and the 23-member choir sings with a loving tone quality that is impossible to get out of your head when all is over... This is... a reading to live with and by, one that you can turn to with confidence over and over again... The booklet presents a fourteen-part biography of the composer, and rounds out an utterly first class production." – Audiophile Audition [3/5/2007], reviewing the B minor Mass

Herreweghe is, above all, a choral conductor and he knows how to discipline a choir. The results here are often
Read more impressive with crystal-clear textures and predominantly fine ensemble and intonation. These virtues often result in splendidly resonant sonorities and sumptuously rich harmonic effects... I enjoyed the Hanover Boys' Choir performances but I feel that this new recording creates a more vivid reflection of these remarkable works. It is certainly an issue which I shall want to listen to many times over and it can be enthusiastically recommended. Excellent sound presentation.

– Nicholas Anderson, Gramophone [12/1986], reviewing the motets

Surprised by the motets May 29, 2014 By Christian  B. (Price, UT) See All My Reviews "Not having listened to the motets before, this is the first thing I went to on this set of discs. They are simply stunning. Other works of his may be more powerful and overwhelming, but these motets may be the most beautiful of Bach's works. The singing is perfect and incredible." Report Abuse
Seamless. September 21, 2012 By John W. (Woori Yallock Vic., Australia) See All My Reviews "Bach's B Minor Mass is considered to be one of his finest compositions. It is of great interest that Bach drew together many different compositions from widely different periods of his life to create this Mass. It is uniquely different from other religious works (except perhaps Beethoven's Missa Solemnis) in that it reflects both Catholic and Lutheran rites, and maybe as a result,is not played in churches of either denomination. This version is superbly presented. It is more flowing than say recordings by Von Karajan,Levine and Solti- hence the reference to "seamless". The soloists and choir are outstanding, the orchestra in lovely accompaniment, and the sound brilliant. What more can one say?" Report Abuse
great B minor Mass August 17, 2012 By elizabeth a. (Gainesville, FL) See All My Reviews "This is my third recording of the B minor Mass and probably my favorite. Every note is clear as a bell, the tempo is brisk. I think Bach would totally approve!" Report Abuse
