Notes and Editorial Reviews

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of pianist Clara Haskil's death on December 7, 1960, Universal Classics has assembled all of her recordings for the Decca, Philips, DG, and Westminster labels. Despite Haskil's "saintly reputation" and fragile state of health, her playing is mostly strong and well articulated, even angular and aggressive at times. The latter qualities especially come out in her stereo Philips solo and concerto recordings (try the Schubert B-flat sonata's outer movements for size), where the piano is closely miked--yet you also perceive this in the more distant perspective characterizing the mono DG, Philips, and Westminster selections.

Haskil commanded a wider repertoire than her commercial
Read more recordings preserve, yet there's enough variety to fairly assess her artistry. Among the seven Mozart concertos she recorded there are no less than four versions of the D minor K. 466, and each bears noticeable differences. I prefer Haskil/Fricsay for the most animated Rondo, Haskil/Swoboda for the pianist's power and force in the first-movement development section, and her original, arguably overwrought first-movement cadenza in her stereo traversal with Markevitch.

If only we could morph the solo part from the more pianistically incisive 1950 Beethoven C minor concerto onto the stereo remake's far superior orchestral framework. At the same time, the crisp and poised Falla Nights in the Gardens of Spain and Chopin F minor concerto represent the best of the Haskil/Markevitch collaborations, with the Chopin providing a rare opportunity to hear the music via Alfred Cortot's reorchestration.

Haskil's bold yet never mannered textural layering grabs attention in the Schumann concerto's outer movements, as does The Hague Philharmonic's snake charmer of an oboe soloist. Yet perhaps the rare Decca shellac Waldszenen and breathtakingly fleet Abegg Variations (the Philips mono version, an earlier Polydor shellac rendition was not included here) showcase Haskil's finest Schumann playing. I'm especially partial to her amazing Scarlatti, a veritable master class in color application, ornamentation, note placement, and timing, while her super-synchronized (technically and spiritually) partnership in six Mozart and all 10 Beethoven violin sonatas with Arthur Grumiaux belong in any serious chamber music collection.

Decca gives full discographical information, but it's all bunched together in the booklet notes and not so easy to read at first glance in Jeremy Siepmann's newly commissioned essay that provides a good, contextual overview of Haskil's career. Because comparisons with the most recent CD remasterings yield no palpable timbral differences in transfer quality, collectors who already own previously released Philips Haskil boxes or single-disc reissues from DG and Westminster need not replace them. Still, it's good to have all of this material under one roof, so to speak, especially for those who are both new to Haskil's artistry and willing to invest in a very reasonably priced, space-saving 17-disc boxed set.
