MADRIGALI A DUE VOCI Agnès Mellon (sop); Dominique Visse (ct); Ens Barcarole ZIG-ZAG TERRITOIRES ZZT 101001 (60:52 Text and Translation)

Music of MONTEVERDI, MERULA, B. STROZZI, ROGNONI, SANCES, GAGLIANO, CARISSIMI, VALENTINI

This interesting program traces the development of the madrigal following the era of the Renaissance polyphonic pieces that originally bore that name. Four duets for equal voices, here sung by Read more soprano and countertenor rather than the voices originally assigned, are taken from Monteverdi’s Seventh Book of Madrigals (and hence dating before 1619). His successors as exemplified here included Tarquinio Merula, Giovanni Valentini, and Giovanni Sances. These works are all new to records in my collection, for Valentini has appeared only once, Sances is represented only by sacred music, and Merula (more frequently recorded) stands out for a collection of arias by Montserrat Figueras ( Fanfare 17:2 and 32:4). Another duet, Carissimi’s Partenza dalla sua Donna , was recorded once before by Agnès Mellon, that time with René Jacobs. Still another duet, Marco da Gagliano’s Cantai un tempo , was on an obscure Italian LP devoted to the composer. The last stage of development represented here is the solo cantata of Barbara Strozzi and Sances again. Strozzi’s cantata, L’Eraclito amoroso , has four other versions currently available. A single instrumental work for viola bastarda by Ricardo Rognoni, the obscure father of two composer sons, completes the program.

This is more than just a well-constructed program. The singing is superb, the two equal voices meshing in the interpretations of the texts. The solo cantatas are divided, Mellon for Strozzi and Visse for Sances. Mellon formed this ensemble more than a decade ago, but its first recording (on Alpha) was not reviewed here. The partnership with Visse goes all the way back to the ensemble Les Arts Florissants and has continued to the present. Their rapport shows. This is an unusually worthwhile disc, as collections go.
