Notes and Editorial Reviews
I can hardly blame Ronan O’Hora, but the cover of this disc is blazoned with a bold announcement, or warning: “Prepare yourself to experience music making of the highest level, beautifully recorded with superb engineering and performed with a rarely heard abandon.” I find myself OK with much of that statement, but uneasy at the thought of these lovely Mozart pieces played with “rarely heard abandon.” Instead of such abandon, rarely heard and therefore probably incorrect, we have a graceful, unaffected recording by the British pianist O’Hora, who is anything but abandoned. In fact, lovely though his playing typically is, I think that a little more vigor would enliven movements such as the Presto that ends the Sonata in A Minor. He plays the
beloved variations (on what we know as Twinkle, Twinkle) perkily, a little faster than my favorite recording, by Christoph Eschenbach, whose slower tempo makes several of the variations sing in a way O’Hora’s performance does not. I also find the way he slows down several of the variations disconcerting. Yet the precision of O’Hora’s playing, its distinctness, the stylish shapings of his phrases, and the excellent recording make this new collection attractive.

"Pianist Ronan O'Hara delivers a satisfying program of Mozart piano sonatas in this CD from the Royal Philharmonic Masterworks series. O'Hara's touch is light and delicate, emphasizing the subtle nuances of Mozart's writing without excessive flamboyance. I liked this refined, superbly recorded program, and I'm sure it will please fans of solo instrumental music."
