Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUBERT Symphonies: No. 3; No. 5 Howard Shelley, cond; Royal PO ROYAL PHILHARMONIC MASTERWORKS 28950 (53:24)

This seems to be another reissue of performances from the early 1990s that have appeared in a variety of incarnations on various labels. The current one bears the moniker “Audiophile Collection,” with a perfunctory blurb concerning its “editing and remastering via 32-bit digital sound processing.” Whatever … But it has to be admitted that the sound is very good indeed, in terms of presence, bite, Read more and ripe resonance.

The versatile British pianist-conductor Howard Shelley makes a fine showing here. In No. 3, the outer movements are robust, genial, and spirited, with fine momentum (both exposition repeats included). The Allegretto is perhaps a little generic, and short on dynamic contrast (a real pp in short supply). No. 5 is well shaped and sensitive in all four movements, with all repeats taken.

All in all, these are very likeable performances, if perhaps missing the stronger podium presence of the likes of Abbado (Chamber Orchestra of Europe/DG), Harnoncourt (Concertgebouw/Teldec), or Menuhin (Sinfonia Varsovia/Warner Apex). But assuming less than full price, and given the outstanding sound, the disc is easy to recommend.
