Notes and Editorial Reviews

Zehetmair has an impressive career in Germany, but has not received the acclaim he deserves elsewhere. He is probably the finest living representative of the “German school”. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but his playing is lively and polished, with a restrained use of vibrato that never degenerates into thin or harsh tone. He’s heard to excellent effect in the Brahms and Dvorák concertos, where you can really imagine him as the logical successor to Joseph Joachim, but his technique is more than a match for the Paganini Caprices, and the discs of music by Schubert, Schumann, and Berg are as good as anyone’s. His Bach Sonatas and Partitas also feature scrupulous musicianship allied to a genuinely spontaneous response to many Read more of the dance movements. There are also few violinists active today that I would rather hear play the Mozart concertos. This is a great set, and a worthy testament by a really fine artist.
