Conductor Lowell Graham is a leading figure in concert band circles who has recorded with numerous different ensembles. Here, with the estimable forces of musicians of the United States Air Force, he offers an attractive and varied program. I wish to single out the Persichetti symphony for special notice; it is a truly great masterwork, and if it were an orchestral composition it would surely be a repertory staple. The Dionysiaques of Florent Schmitt (1870–1958), a piece contemporaneous with and heavily indebted to early Stravinsky, is enjoying a belated revival; readers may be interested in the three contrasting reviews of the Timothy Reynish recording on Chandos, by Martin Anderson ( Fanfare 24:4), Adrian Corleonis (24:5), and James H. North (24: 5). Certainly, this performance does not have the menace that Anderson found in the piece. The brief Barber and Vaughan Williams pieces are well-known staples that ably fulfill their ceremonial and martial functions.

Regarding the rest, for two of the works presented here—the typically well-crafted and effective Summer Flourish of Clark McAlister (b.1946) and the colorful and energetic three-movement Dance Suite of Aldo Forte (b.1953)—these are the only available recordings. The two remaining items—the lofty and inspirational With Trump and Wing of noted concert band conductor Jack Stamp (b.1954), and the Hallelujah Fantasy of William Hartley (b.1927), which employs motifs from American hymnody and Celtic folk tunes—have only one alternative recording (that of Stamp’s WTaW being again by Lowell Graham). The Barber, Vaughan Williams, and Persichetti pieces all have numerous other versions in the catalog. All of them enjoyed standard-setting recordings by the redoubtable Frederick Fennell, and those would be my first choices, but they are scattered on four different discs. As with all anthologies, the challenge is getting all the pieces you want in good performances, and this CD is a helpful and worthy addition to the catalog. I wish the recorded sound were somewhat warmer and deeper, more reverberant and less dry and shallow, but it is certainly acceptable.
