Scores included! Pressing quality? March 15, 2013 By David B. (Kingston, RI) See All My Reviews "Not mentioned in this product listing is that the DVD contains not only PDFs of the (somewhat minimal) liner notes/booklet information but also a scan of the "Bach Gesamtausgabe 1899" -- typeset scores for what I presume is pretty much everything Bach wrote. The inclusion of the scores really makes this collection an excellent study tool. ///// The scores are provided as 300dpi monochrome PDFs. On the violin sonata I printed, the background is clean and unspeckled, text and dots are clear; staff lines are very nearly flat/level and the resolution is more than enough to play through a piece and decide whether you want to buy a "real" edition of it. Accompanists be warned: you probably get only a bass line, and the figuring can get a bit hard to read. There's also one "Band" in this collection that contains about 140 pages of Bach's manuscript, scanned in grayscale instead of monochrome. The catalog and contents of each Band/volume are, unsurprisingly, in German, so you will need to learn a few terms to make good use of them. ///// I am slightly concerned about the pressing quality of this collection. I do not actually have any CD players hooked up to our home music system, so the first thing I have to do before I can listen is "rip" CDs to the file server. Usually this process is perfect, but with this collection, I've noticed my ripping software having to read some tracks up to three times to get a correct read. So far, with the first 33 of the CDs complete, it has always succeeded eventually, matching the checksum of each track to that obtained by other users who have contributed to the AccurateRip online database. This will be more of a concern to anyone who is planning to listen directly from the CD or uses ripping software that isn't quite so careful. {I tried to put paragraphs in, but this silly web site ate them. I edited the review to put in ///// instead.}" Report Abuse
