UnforgettableJune 22, 2013By L. ACKERMAN (Washington, DC)See All My Reviews"This was one of my favorite LPs in times gone by. Cleo Laine had the most incredible instrument(saw her live in 1977),like no other singer I have ever heard (operatic or not!) Her timbre was not necessarily pretty, but the smokey contralto sound contributed to a fascinating temperament. You would have never thought such voice would be able to produce a 'G above high C'and 4 octaves of range. Now, that might not mean much, true, if it weren't for her impeccable taste, using her voice in the most musical manner, in whatever she sang. The technique she applied was phenomenal, never flashy, be it a Sondheim song, a folk tune or a jazz scatty sequence. This live concert (when she was a gorgeous 47 years of age) singing along her saxophonist husband John Dankworth (their chemistry was truly touching on stage) proves a special ocassion. Both this album and its sequel of a decade later are worth getting. But this one is a jewel."Report Abuse
