The King of Swing Plays Mozart April 10, 2017 By owen  ryan (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "Benny Goodman, born May 30, 1909, was no. 9 of 12 siblings raised in Chicago's slum. At age 10 he learned to play Clarinet at his Synagogue. In a 1975 interview he said ''playing music was a great escape from poverty...I set out at an early age to do what I could.'' At age 14 he played in a band with Bix Beiderbeck. During the 30's into the 40's he played with all the great names of American Jazz and big bands and gained the title of the ''King of Swing.'' In a 1937 broadcast of the ''Camel Caravan'' he played Mozart's Clarinet Quintet and recorded this work for RCA with the Budapest Quartet in 1938. In 1949 at age 40 he studied with the great Classical Clarinetist, Reginald Kell. He completely relearned Clarinet technique at that time. The King made these recordings in 1956 at the Berkshire Music Festival in Tanglewood with Charles Munch's Boston Symphony Orchestra and a string quartet drawn from the BSO. This recording serves as a testament to the musicianship of Goodman and is a historical treasure as well as some great music-making in a surprsingly good recording. Consider it your patriotic duty to have this great performance in your collection." Report Abuse
