MENDELSSOHN A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Songs Without Words Silver Garburg Pn Duo OEHMS OC 755 (59:27)

In the 19th century, access to classical-music performance was impeded for all by limitations in transportation and by absence of electronic technology. However, it was commonplace to find a piano in the homes of upper-class, of educated, of middle-class, and of musically inclined families. Thus, the practice of piano reduction (or transcription) of symphonic and chamber works became common not only to Read more popularize such music but also just to make it available in some accessible form. Such piano reductions were made by lesser and greater musicians, and by the many in between. For reductions that were better served by two pianos, the practical compromise was four hands at one piano. Here we have four-hand piano reductions (or arrangements) by Mendelssohn of his incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream , which the composer had printed four years earlier than the orchestral score and parts, and four-hand piano arrangements by Mendelssohn of his six op. 62 and the first of his op. 67 Songs Without Words , originally for piano solo.

The two pianists in this duo, Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg, deliver such a fine pianistic and interpretive product that no words of praise from me can do their efforts sufficient justice. The musical effects in the orchestral version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream that are so attractive are different, of course, in this four-hand piano version, but their attractiveness remains at an equal measure. I attribute this to Mendelssohn’s genius as arranger, but also to the Silver-Garburg Duo’s phrasing, lightness of touch (and heaviness where called for), and clear understanding of the musical content and how to deliver it.

If only for the four-hand piano arrangement of A Midsummer Night’s Dream incidental music, you will want this disc. The Silver-Garburg Duo is a delight to hear in this delightful music inspired by a delightful Shakespearean play—and, oh yes, composed by an incomparable musical genius.
