Notes and Editorial Reviews

The three violin concertos are all early: the C major, written for Tomasini, is the best as well as the best known; the A major did not enter the repertoire until the 1950s and is both more ambitious and interesting than the G major. No less an authority than H. C. Robbins Landon speaks of it in his recently published Haydn: Chronicle and Works—the early years 1732-65 (Thames and Hudson: 1981) in less than enthusiastic terms. He finds the slow movement not only wanting the charm of the famous 'serenade' movement of the C major but also lacking in real inspiration, though he might, I think, modify his view were he to hear Salvatore Accardo's playing which is far from charmless... RG thought it an improvement on the somewhat earnest Read more Schroder/Leonhardt disc (Telefunken AF6 41344, 8/73). Much though I liked this record, Accardo's version is purer in tone colour and every bit as well recorded. Both Accardo and Bruno Canino are rather forwardly balanced but not unreasonably so. Haydn is said to have had a high opinion of this piece in his later life and though, again, it is not great music, it gives undoubted pleasure.
