Notes and Editorial Reviews

BACH Flute Sonatas: BWV 1020; BWV 1031; BWV 1035; BWV 1030; BWV 1033; BWV 1032; BWV 1034; Partita, BWV 1013 Marina Piccinini (fl); Brasil Guitar Duo AVIE 2196 (2 CDs: 96:56)

What distinguishes this collection of Bach flute works from any other I know is that the accompaniment is by two guitarists rather than the typical (and undoubtedly more correct) harpsichord. This duo has rearranged the keyboard parts, leaving the Read more flute lines untouched. It creates an interesting, though relatively shallow, sound. The engineer seems to have tried to make up for the relative weightlessness of the two guitars by recording them extremely closely; when I put the first disc on, my impulse was to back up. Piccinini has a full tone, and a seamless technique. She is a forthright player, but I don’t always find her playing as sensitive as it might be. Listening to her play a favorite sonata, the one in E? that is BWV 1031, I wish for more lilt and, for once, less drive. I hear more of this modulation of tone and approach in an old recording by Peter-Lukas Graf. Then there are recordings by James Galway and Jean-Pierre Rampal to contend with. I’ve heard Paula Robison play some of these works beautifully as well. But I don’t want to discount Piccinini, whose rich tone and consummate drive makes many of these movements work magnificently, and whose accompaniment makes them sound different from other recordings. Many readers will also enjoy these recordings.

Great Performance December 16, 2012 By Guering F. (West Orange, NJ) See All My Reviews "I love Bach. I also love the sound of the flute with a harpsichord, but these sonatas transcribed from flute-harpsichord to flute-guitar has made a great impact on my listening experience. There is a magic air surrounding the sonatas in this 2-album set. Ms Piccini and the Brasil Guitar Duo perform these with such accuracy and feeling that makes up want more. This is an excellent and recommended set of very professionally executed Bach sonatas." Report Abuse
