Notes and Editorial Reviews

How does one begin to describe these riches? This is an absolute smoker of a Don Juan, and the most lovable, rollicking Till Eulenspiegel imaginable. In the concerted works, Kempe shadows his soloists with sophisticated elan.

...Kempe was one of the greatest masters of orchestral balance ever to mount a podium. No matter how thick or busy Strauss' opulent textures, Kempe makes immediate and logical sense of it all. Yet he never sacrifices tone for clarity, and allows the Dresden musicians to flaunt their creamy colors while maintaining clearly defined rhythms. There's not a single performance here that doesn't glow with insight, intelligence, and inner warmth.

------------------------------

Kempe's performances are warm and humane, eloquent, heroic, and nostalgic. They stand, with those of Karajan, Boehm, Clemens Krauss, and the composer himself, at the head of the class... Has there ever been a more jaunty or swaggering Till: rhythmically pointed, marvelously inflected, and transparently clear with musical lines charging across the stage, orchestra sections chasing other sections? The headlong rush that opens Don Juan subsides but never fully relaxes: The music's ardor is never far from the surface. Kempe ends the piece brilliantly: a simple dissolution even more striking than all the sound and fury that precedes its falling phrase.

Kempe's Heldenleben opens in a more measured fashion than Don Juan. Nevertheless, the conductor's subtle understatement and thoughtfulness should not be confused with underinterpretation. He seeks and finds the long line and avoids the temptation for a musical climax at every forte. Helped by a characterful solo violin, this recording joins my pantheon of favorite heroes: Karajan, Barbirolli, and Beecham...
