Notes and Editorial Reviews

Like the legendary Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Prinzregenten Theatre in Munich, has undergone three rebirths - the first in 1901, the second in 1945 and the third, in two stages, in 1988 and 1996. To be inaugurated, shut down and re-opened is the troublesome Leitmotiv in this wonderful theater's 100 years of existence. This very existence began precisely on Tuesday August 20, 1901 at 6 PM, with an inaugural celebration before many invited VIP guests. After introductory remarks by Max von Schillings, Margarete Swoboda, a court actress, recited a festival prologue penned by Hans von Hopfen. After this, act III of Wagner's Meistersinger was given conducted by Herman Zumpe, the musical director of the theater. Right up until World War Read more II, the theater was the place in Munich where the operas of Wagner were performed, with the best singers and conductors. After the War, because it had been hardly damaged, it once again became the focal point of Munich's opera life. In 1988, the theater was refurbished and in 1996 it was completely renovated. Undoubtedly, the different phases in the 100 year history of the Prinzregenten Theatre - 1901-1944 the Wagner stage; 1945-1963 the stop-gap stage for the State Opera; 1988/96 until the present day opera workshops and a multi-purpose theater - determined what kind of singers were heard there. Initially, of course, the Siegfrieds, Wotans and Brunnhildes dominated right before the broad spectrum of all vocal ranges and categories came to the fore. That in this present CD collection Wagner singers must perforce dominate is due to the fact that for legal reasons only artists could be included whose recordings are older than fifty years. This means that the second phase of the history of this theater is dominated by artists who made their debut prior to 1950 and that the third phase is not represented at all. Read less
