Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Occasionally a player comes along who turns all the preconceived ideas about their instrument on their head, and reinvents the repertoire. … Alison Balsom is a virtuoso player and a natural, gifted communicator, but what really comes across is her sheer exuberance and joy in making music." Classic FM Magazine

?Following the popular and critical international success of her Haydn and Hummel concertos recording (“Poetic renditions … performed with a clear, soaring tone, virtuosic technique and elegant phrasing.” -The New York Times), Alison Balsom has recorded a programme of Italian Baroque concertos.

Already released in Germany in January, the album has quickly garnered critics’ praise: “The fast
Read more movements are played with sparkling ease and technical brilliance. The slow movement [Balsom] forms delicately, tenderly, yet without denying she’s playing a brass instrument.” - MDR Figaro

English trumpeter Alison Balsom’s personal charms may have besotted the media, but there is no doubt that she can make her instrument sing. The thirty-two-year-old’s EMI discography includes the imaginative transcriptions album “Caprice,” which features Balsom making Debussy’s Syrinx sound like an exotic aria from a lost opera. After lovely Bach arrangements and an obligatory Haydn/Hummel concerto disc, it would have been good to see Balsom record a contemporary challenge — such as James Macmillan's Epiclesis, which she has performed live. But what EMI gives us is an FM-ready set of concertos by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Tartini, Marcello and Cimarosa, most adapted from originals for violin or oboe. If the dulcet strings sound a shade old-fashioned, Balsom’s sheer beauty of sound mutes criticism. Her round, warm tone makes the exquisitely melodic Largo of Vivaldi’s A minor concerto RV 356 flow and glow like liquid amber; the arrangement of a Sonata de Chiesa in D minor by Albinoni is another highlight, particularly with her cantabile phrasing in the dark-hued opening Grave. Veteran trumpet virtuoso John Wallace called it when he said that his former student can ‘draw the sweetest sounds out of the trumpet to soothe even the most savage beast.’ — Bradley Bambarger, Listen
