Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set contains five Masses, two Requiems, eight overtures, two motets, and the aria “Dei tuoi filgli la madre tu vedi” from Media, sung by Maria Callas (1955, with Serafin and La Scala). Cherubini’s sacred music follows naturally on the late Masses of Haydn; indeed, the largest of them, at nearly eighty minutes, is the Missa solemnis is D minor of 1811, composed for Prince Esterházy. Two other Masses were written to celebrate royal coronations: Louis XVIII in 1819, and Charles X in 1825. These are, in short, big, festive works and there’s no questioning Cherubini’s sincerity or inspiration. The medium itself fits well with his natural conservatism: he just writes good music, and with Muti
Read more at the helm we are guaranteed the most committed and dynamic performances possible.

The two Requiem setting have always enjoyed a certain following. Igor Markevitch recorded the austere D minor, with male chorus, in Prague for Deutsche Grammophon. The splashier C minor Requiem has had several champions, including Toscanini. Berlioz admired it, and little else by this composer. And let’s face it: hearing the opening of the “Dies irae,” with its brass fanfare and splashy wallop on the tam-tam, what’s not to like? Muti’s performances of both works, as with the Masses, couldn’t be more vivid or rhythmically incisive. His soloists are all very good to excellent, and the choral contributions (mostly the Ambrosian Singers) leave little to be desired. These really are the modern reference recordings for this music.

Padding out the discs of sacred music are two attractive motets, the aria, and eight highly enjoyable overtures ably conducted by Marriner with his Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. We really do only have a dim sense of Cherubini as a composer because most of his output was for the theater, and only a couple of his operas (Medea especially) hover on the fringes of the repertoire. That makes this set all the more important, and we’re lucky that it truly can be said to be definitive. Seven CDs of Cherubini religious music–plus a few overtures–may seem a bit much, but at the price you might as well go for the whole collection. Get it while you can.
