Sony Classical's "Bernstein Century" series is easy to recognize by the Warhol-esque repetitions of Leonard Bernstein's face on the album jacket. Bernstein would have liked this mythification, but in all honesty, he deserves it. By sheer force of personality, he drew a whole new set of people into the world of classical music, and then kept them there with riveting and emotional performances of virtually every major orchestral work. This 'Harold in Italy' recording is no exception. Bernstein brings a lushness to the Philharmonic without getting in way of William Lincer's direct, no-nonsense viola playing. Although originally written for virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, the violinist refused to play the work because it was not showy enough for him. Only since then has the work become a favorite of violists. The cantata 'La Morte de Cléopâtre" is relatively unknown work that was not successful in Berlioz' time. However, this score is full of operatic drama, and as always for Berlioz, is brilliantly orchestrated. These works are no Mahler symphony for Bernstein, but these are great recordings that have stood remastering well. They serve as an excellent tribute to one of the great musicians of the 20th century. REVIEWS: New York Times (Publisher) (7/30/00, p.30) - Typical Bernstein vigor colors two of Berlioz's finest works. William Lincer...proves an estimable soloist in "Harold," and the mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel touchingly limns a range of emotions as the Queen of the Nile..." |
