Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Alfred Cortot's early 1930s recordings of Bach's 'Brandendurg Concertos' with the Orchestra of the École Normale de Musique mark the first time that all six concertos were recorded. One would expect these performances, produced in this pre-"performance-practice" era of more primitive recording technology, to sound dated and harsh. The delightful surprise of this pioneering recording is the astonishing level of musicianship of the performers, many of whom were the leading instrumentalists of their day. Consequently, the playing of the Concertino sections (especially in the Fifth Concerto) remains some of the finest playing of this music on disc. Cortot shines his Brandenburg Concertos through what to twentieth-century ears is a less familiar prism, but one that, nevertheless, cannot fail to convince by the brilliance of its colors alone.
