Notes and Editorial Reviews

Franz Schreker was one of the best-known composers of his day, with several popular operas to his credit, and after decades of neglect his music has begun to receive attention once again. This is most welcome, as it restores an important figure to the history of musical modernism and also allows some truly beautiful music to be heard. The advocacy of conductors such as James Conlon (who has also championed Schreker's contemporary Zemlinsky) has been crucial in gaining a new hearing for this music, and Conlon's impeccable sense for Schreker's lush orchestral style makes this disc one of the best available introductions to the composer.

This is most evident in the "Vorspiel zu einem Drama" on this disc, a greatly expanded and developed version of the overture to Schreker's operatic masterpiece 'Die Gezeichneten.' Bracketing this are the youthful, more conventionally late-romantic Intermezzo and 'Romantic Suite,' and Schreker's final work, another offshoot of an dramatic project--a prelude for the unfinished opera 'Memnon'--in which a more exotic style reinforces the Egyptian subject.
