Notes and Editorial Reviews

There is no real need to background these compositions since they number among Mozart's most frequently performed sacred works. Nor is it necessary to acquaint the readership with the credentials of Helmuth Rilling. He is highly regarded in music circles for his insight into the pillars of the choral repertoire, and his performances always reflect an unprecedented and faultless balance of spirituality and musicianship. His dynamic yet quiet personality allows Rilling to establish a bond with his performers that enables him to extract from them artistry that is unquestionably superior.

This recent release from Hänssler is an honorable addition to the Rilling discography, evincing equal amounts of emotion, gravitas, and
Read more tenderness. The chorus is full-toned, poised, alert, and agile, singing with commitment and understanding, and the soloists are equally impressive in sound quality, diction, and technique. Canadian soprano Donna Brown's singing in the Laudate Dominum from the Vespers and in the motet Exsultate jubilate is nothing short of stunning. Brown is as equal to the tasks in Mozart's demanding score as my favorite, Elly Ameling. Brown's technique is sure-footed, and she deftly handles the technical complexities of the opening and closing movements and succeeds nicely in finding the message behind the Marian text in the motet's Andante. The Bach Collegium Stuttgart plays with an enviable stylistic crispness, topping off a recording that demonstrates meticulous attention to each and every detail, be it noted or implied.

If you're a Mozartean or a lover of choral music, you'll rue the day you let this one get away. Visit your favorite retailer or e-tailer—and do it soon!
