Notes and Editorial Reviews

Unalloyed beauty - Gibbs and Mel-Loc Wu brilliantly convey the varied moods of each work.

Arnold Bax completed the first version of his Violin Sonata No. 1 in 1915, well in advance of his symphonies. Yet the sonata's broad dimensions and three-movement layout clearly anticipate the symphonic works to come. The rhapsodic first movement brings to mind the bucolic slow movement of Bax's Fourth. After a nervously dancing scherzo, the first movement's wistful melody returns as the finale's main theme, albeit in more energized fashion. From first to last, this sonata conjures a delightful spell that has you longing to return for more, no doubt thanks to Robert Gibbs and Mary Mel-Loc Wu's sensitive and deeply felt

The Legend and Ballad were composed around the time of Bax's finest symphonic poems (1915 and 1916, respectively) and share those works' refined drama as well as their lush exoticism. The disc opens with the 1901 G minor Sonata, a youthful and energetic student work that, while not yet establishing Bax's individuality, nonetheless displays his confidence and remarkable melodic fecundity. Gibbs and Mel-Loc Wu brilliantly convey the varied moods of each work. ASV's recording offers an intimate front-row-seat perspective but is a bit bass shy, somewhat lacking in warmth and depth. Still, this disc is recommended for Baxians, violin aficionados, and lovers of unalloyed beauty. [7/24/2002]
