Notes and Editorial Reviews

Volume 17 contains five short (under 14 minutes) cantatas composed for January and February of 1724. For the most part, in these cantatas the choir is limited to singing unadorned chorales––three in No. 153 and two each in Nos. 154 and 144. BWV 73 starts with an unusual (possibly unique) movement in which commentary in the form of recitatives for the tenor, bass, and soprano is interpolated between phrases of the chorale. Bach dispensed with the simple chorale setting altogether, however, in BWV 181, moving the elaborate choral movement from the beginning to the end of the cantata... As always, I’ve barely skimmed the surface of the contents of these discs [Volumes 16 to 19 of the Suzuki Bis Bach cantata series]. For the Bach aficionado, Read more they are, of course, indispensable. For other collectors, they are merely highly recommended.
