Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ever since his 70s rendition of the Preludes (Columbia M30486), it has been clear that Nelson Freire is a spectacularly gifted Chopin performer, a virtuoso with taste, discipline, tact, and sensitivity as well as power. His new disc, his first for Decca, more than confirms that achievement. This is one of the great Chopin recordings. Warmly recorded, it beautifully captures Freire's expansive, faultlessly detailed playing. Every note seems clear and clearly in its place, and yet Freire is alert to Chopin's nuances. He adjusts tempos, but subtly. In the return to the main themes of the last movement of the Sonata in B Minor, for instance, he broadens the tempo slightly to render the conclusion more impressive in what sounds like a white-tie Read more version of something stated more passionately before. He plays feathery scales and portentous chords all with a forward motion that clarifies Chopin's structures. One hears every note, but perfectly balanced.

At the highest level of virtuosity, a musician makes music-making sound easy. One reads about the difficulty of the Etudes, op. 25, yet Freire's rendition is so lyrical and accurate that one hears their songfulness rather than worrying about their technical challenges. Few pianists have rendered as effectively the oddly mysterious opening bars to the Etude in A Minor, and few could make a more convincing transition to the impassioned bars that follow. His Etude in Gb is delightfully playful, as charming and sprightly as a spring day. Even in the most challenging pieces, one can always follow the story line, I might say, in a Freire performance. It's an added bonus that his tone is ravishing. A near perfect Chopin recital.
