Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ignaz Friedman was born in Poland in 1882. Though his father was a professional violinist and clarinetist, he allowed for his son's interest in the piano. He studied first in Krakow, then Leipzig and finally Vienna in 1901, where he was taught by Leschetizky for four years. He also studied composition and later composed substantial amounts of music. His debut in Vienna was with the Vienna Philharmonic when they played the Tchaikovsky, Liszt No. 1 and the Brahms No. 2. This was the first of what was to be over 3000 concerts in his lifetime. In 1920, he toured the USA and signed a contract with Columbia Records. In 1927 for the 100th anniversary of the death of Beethoven, he joined Casals to perform the cello music, Huberman for the complete Read more violin sonatas and both these artists for the complete Piano Trios. The only recording of these artists playing together is the Kreutzer Sonata which will soon be released on Opus Kura OPK2006. The Nazis banned him from performing in 1933. He looked for a place of refuge including Norway and the US, but eventually settled in Australia, after a concert tour there was cancelled. His right hand became paralyzed in 1943, when he was forced into retirement. He died in 1948. Read less
