Notes and Editorial Reviews

Joshua Bell; Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields/Sir Neville Marriner. London 4211 145-2 [with Mendelssohn: Concerto in E minor] (recorded 1986).

Joshua Bell’s playing of the concerto is outstanding from a technical standpoint, even if his interpretation at times seems applied and “violinistic” rather than directly, convincingly musical. There are some lovely moments, especially in Adagio, and there can be no question that as an interpreter Bell is solidly in the grand manner. Tonally, London offers a very satisfying recording, but the balance favors the soloist to an undesirable degree. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
