Born in Dublin, the cellist and composer Victor Herbert was just seven years of age when he left Ireland, spending the next twenty years of his life in Germany and finally emigrating to the USA where, in 1889, he was appointed to the teaching staff of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City. It was there that he first encountered the famous Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak, who was appointed Director of the National Conservatory in 1892.
