Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you missed these recordings, made during the mid-to-late 1990s, or have crossed paths with a volume or two in a used-CD shop, you can now obtain the whole collection in one 16-disc boxed set. Koopman isn’t everyone’s favorite Bach interpreter—at least consistently across such a vast repertoire—but he certainly has a point of view (which he explains very succinctly and clearly in the notes) and it’s as legitimate as anyone’s, especially regarding articulation, pedaling, and registration. His tempo choices may jar sometimes—he rips through many of the chorale preludes at a clip that can be a bit unsettling—but they also can excite to a greater degree than some other more “traditional” interpreters. And it’s very nice to have the Preludes Read more juxtaposed with the sung chorales (performed by the very fine Amsterdam Baroque Choir).

Of course, one of the draws of this set—in which Koopman claims to perform “all the works ascribed to Bach, including the doubtful pieces”—is his use of various, carefully chosen organs, from the Silbermann organ in Freiberg and the Schnitger instrument in the Jacobi-Kirche in Hamburg to other “period” organs in the Netherlands and Germany. No matter what issues you may have with some of Koopman’s style choices, you can’t argue with the sounds of these marvelous instruments, so impressively recorded. (Dispositions of each of the nine organs are provided.) From the first track of Disc 1, Bach’s monumental Fantasia and Fugue in G minor BWV 542, you realize that Koopman has chosen the perfect opening to the unique and exhilarating musical journey to follow. A great, indispensable collection.
